CONSULTATION COMPLETED TO DATE

The Notice of Study Commencement (available here) was published in local newspapers in early June.

Meetings were held with Emergency Service Providers and the City of Brantford

A Public Information Centre was held on June 21, 2012 at the Royal Canadian Legion.

The project was identified as having minimal and predictable impacts which could be readily mitigated and was "stepped down" to a group C.

An environmental screening document is being prepared for MTO's internal use.

OVERVIEW

This project originally included the rehabilitation of six bridges on Highway 403 in the City of Brantford (GWP 37-00-00):

  • Ewing Drive Bridge
  • Tollgate Road Bridge
  • King George Road (Highway 24) Bridge
  • North Park Street Bridge
  • West Street Bridge
  • Park Road / Wayne Gretzky Parkway Bridge

MTO has decided to include improvements at the Oak Park Road Bridge as part of the project. A Class EA was completed in 2009 for interchange improvements at this location; however, the scope of work will be reduced as part of GWP 37-00-00, to include only bridge rehabilitation and intersection improvements. Construction staging is outlined below.

The Highway 403 bridge rehabilitations are listed in the 2010 Southern Highways Program for rehabilitation between 2012 and 2014, subject to funding and approvals.

The following outlines the construction staging and traffic impacts at each structure. Adjacent structures will not be under construction at the same time.

Oak Park Road Bridge:

  • Bridge will be open to one lane of traffic in each direction
  • Occasional full closure will be required at each bridge for bridge jacking and bearing replacement. A signed detour route will not be used. Closure will be signed as "Use Alternate Route"
  • Construction is anticipated in 2013, subject to funding and approvals.

Ewing Drive Bridge:

  • Bridge will be open to one lane of traffic. Two directions of travel will be maintained using temporary traffic signals.
  • Occasional full closure of Ewing Drive will be required for bridge jacking and bearing replacement. A signed detour route will not be used. Closure will be signed as "Use Alternate Route"
  • Construction is anticipated in 2014, subject to funding and approvals.

Tollgate Road Bridge

  • Bridge closed to vehicular and pedestrian traffic during construction (approximately 2-3 months). A signed detour route will be in place along St. George Street, Queensway Drive and King George Road. Trucks will be directed to use Highway 403. Click here for a figure showing the detour route
  • Construction is anticipated in 2013, subject to funding and approvals

King George Road

  • Bridge will be open to one lane of traffic in each direction. The southbound left turning lane to the Highway 403 eastbound on-ramp will be closed for the entire construction season, and a signed detour route will be in place along Powerline Road to Wayne Gretzky Parkway. Directional signs for access to Highway 403 East will be placed on King George Road and Fairview Drive to direct traffic to Wayne Gretzky Parkway. Fairview Drive will not be signed as a detour route. Click here for a figure showing the detour route
  • Occasional full closure of King George Road will be required for bridge jacking and bearing replacement, with signed detour route and pedestrian access maintained
  • Construction is anticipated in 2014, subject to funding and approvals.

North Park Street

  • Bridges will be open to one lane of traffic in each direction. Morton Avenue will be closed between North Park Street and Hill Avenue for the entire construction season. A signed detour route will be in place along Morton Avenue, Hill Avenue and Wood Street. Click here for a figure showing the detour route
  • Occasional full closure of North Park Street will be required for bridge jacking and bearing replacement. A signed detour route will not be used. Closure will be signed as "Use Alternate Route"
  • Construction is anticipated for 2013, subject to funding and approvals.

West Street / Wayne Gretzky Parkway

  • Bridges will be open to one lane of traffic in each direction.
  • Occasional full closure will be required at each bridge for bridge jacking and bearing replacement, with signed detour routes and pedestrian access maintained
  • Construction is anticipated for 2014 at West Street and 2015 at Wayne Gretzky Parkway, subject to funding and approvals.
