Wellington Road 32 Detour Route:

Wellington Road 32 Detour Map

This project includes the rehabilitation of three bridges on Highway 401 (GWP 3046-09-00):

  • Wellington Road 32 Bridge
  • Highway 6 (Hanlon Expressway) North Bridge
  • Wellington Road 35 Bridge

The design and environmental assessment was initiated in the spring of 2011.

The Highway 401 bridge rehabilitations are listed in the 2010 Southern Highway Program for rehabilitation between 2012 and 2014.

The following outlines the construction staging and traffic impacts at each structure. The bridge rehabilitations at Wellington Road 32 and Wellington Road 35 will not occur simultaneously.

Wellington Road 32 Underpass:

  • The bridge will be closed between Ellis Road and Concession 2. The closure will be approximately four months and a signed detour route will be in place. The detour route shown below will follow Wellington Road 34 and Townline Road.
  • Access will be maintained to the Grand River Conservation Authority Puslinch Tract, immediately southeast of the bridge.
  • Ellis Road will be signed for “Local Traffic Only” to decrease the potential for detoured traffic to use the road during construction.
  • Short duration nightly lane closures will be required on Highway 401.

Wellington Road 35 Underpass:

Highway 6 (Hanlon Expressway) North Underpass:

  • One lane will remain open on the bridge in both directions. The proposed rehabilitation strategy will require nightly lane reductions on Highway 401 to complete the girder and pier repairs.
  • The southbound Highway 6 on-ramp to eastbound Highway 401 will also be closed at night throughout construction to facilitate work on the bridge.
  • The eastbound Highway 401 off-ramp will be closed periodically for paving operations.

Consultation Completed to Date

The Notice of Study Commencement (available here) was published in local newspapers and mailed to the project Contact List in July 2011.

Meetings were held with Emergency Services Providers, Region of Waterloo, Township of Puslinch and County of Wellington.

The project was identified as having minimal and predictable impacts which could be readily mitigated and was "stepped down" to a group C.

An environmental screening document was prepared for MTO internal use in March 2012.
